Finding the right type of easel is important for supporting your canvas as well as keeping your canvas sturdy while you are painting.

There are several types of easels to choose from for your specific needs and depending on the size of your canvas you are working on.

  • A-FRAME/LYRE – As it says in the name this easel is shaped like an A, and it can also be referred to as a Lyre easel. This easel has three legs which makes it easy to sit in a corner as well as fold it up to store it away. This design is also lightweight, and it is easy to move around or set up to use.

  • BENCH/ART HORSE – The bench easel is fun to use due to it offers a place to sit while you are working, so you can get up close and personal with the portrait you are creating. As in the title this easel is shaped like a bench while holding a canvas. You can use the bench as a chair or a table. This easel is also called an Art Horse. 

  • CHILDREN – The easels for children creates a lot of fun for them and a way that they can be extra creative. This type of easel also provides a shelf for all their materials they will need while drawing. Let the children let their talents shine as the practice as a young artist.

  • CONVERTIBLE/HYBRID – This convertible easel is fun to use as it can transform into a tabletop easel or a regular easel. This is great for doing an upright or a horizontal portrait. This easel can also be called a Hybrid due to its transforming abilities. 

  • DISPLAY – With this easel it is meant for mainly being a display due to the fact it is very lightweight and can easily be moved around if putting pressure on it. Even with being lightweight it can still hold a canvas without any issues however, it is not a good idea to use it while you are painting on a canvas.

  • GIANT – The giant easel is great if you are working with a large canvas that is usually bigger than 8FT. You can use this easel with a smaller canvas also however, it works best with the bigger canvas for total support. With this easel having rollers it is also easy to move around. 

  • H-FRAME – The H-FRAME easel like the name says it is shaped like the letter H. This type of easel provides an extra layer of support in the middle to keep a canvas sturdy while you are working on it. This easel is easy to move however, it takes a little more space to store it when it is not in use.

  • PORTABLE – Portable easels are great for working outdoors. This easel can also be referred to as a Plein Air easel. This easel is lightweight, easy to carry, easy to set up, and break down. The Plein Air easel also provides storage for all of your supplies as well.

  • SINGLE MAST – The single mast easels are great for a beginning artist as they are simple to use, easy to store, and easy to move around. This easel is lightweight however, they are not super sturdy but will still provide support for your canvas.

  • TABLETOP – A Tabletop easel can be very convenient if you are working in a small space. Like the name says you can also place this easel on top of a table. This easel is lightweight and easy to lift and carry as well as easy to store away when it is not in use.
