WHAT TYPE OF CANVAS ARE YOU PAINTING ON

Each type of canvas offers a different texture for any painting and depending on what end result you desire will determine the type of canvas you need.

No matter what type of canvas you are using, they all make a great foundation to create your most amazing work of art.

Every type of canvas comes in a variety of sizes for you to get the perfect size for what you are creating whether small or extra large.

Having personally used various types of canvas, my two favorites of all time are the stretched canvas and wood canvas however, I have also had amazing results with all the other types of canvas to.

When someone is creating a painting they are usually planning on it being able to be seen for many years to come without any damage or wear & tear on it.

When choosing a canvas for a lifelong painting, you want to know how durable the material is and if it will keep its original beauty for decades without fading.

Not only does the type of canvas you use play a huge role in the life span of your painting, but the type of paint, medium, silicone, clear coat, and resin that is used also play an even bigger role in the life of it.

You want your paintings to be as vibrant and beautiful in the next 30 years or longer, the same way they were on the day you created them.

CANVAS PANELS

Some canvas panels are made up of a layer of canvas material glued to a rigid board, adhesive, and gesso depending on the brand name that make them.

These panels are thin, and they are a great alternative for a stretched canvas if you are wanting to go lightweight.

A canvas panel works great inside a picture frame that which can help to extend the life of the portrait that was painted on it.

Working with panels can also give you more room to work in your art area as they do not take up much space by being bulky.

Panels are also very light and easy to move around from one location to another such as if you were painting outside.

The panels do not require you to use as much paint as a stretched canvas does, as well as due to being thin and easier to bend if they are too wet the panels also fully dry much faster.

On a panel, a little paint goes a long way so, start off slow because less can be more if you are not careful, you can always add more paint as needed however, it is harder to take more away before causing damage.

You always want to make sure you have enough support for the size of panel you are working on for balance and to prevent damage such as bending in the middle from the weight of the paint.

CANVAS PADS

Canvas pads are great to use for many types of portraits that you can keep together in one book like a photo album.

With a canvas pad you can use pastels, oil paints, oil sticks, acrylics, colored pencils, watercolors, and more.

There are different types of canvas pads that you can buy in which some are specific to the type of medium you are using and others are made from universal material that you can use multiple types of mediums on.

Canvas pads are a form of paper that is thin and very lightweight, so they will not take up much space as well as they are cost-effective.

These pads are great to use for practicing on your art skills without spending a lot of money on other types of a canvas.

You can also tear a piece of the canvas paper out of the pad and attach it to a piece of cardboard to get more support while you are painting.

You can find canvas pads in different sizes to fit your needs from small to large in which it is great to have more than one option.

When you are painting on canvas paper, you want to keep it flat until it is fully dry to prevent the paper from curling up and causing damage to the portrait.

STRETCHED CANVAS

The stretched canvas is very common and popular for the amazing paintings that you can create on them as well as they are solid and easy to balance.

A stretched canvas is made up of one layer of a type of canvas material that is tightly stretched around a piece of wood in various shapes such as square or heart and then the fabric is made secure on the wood with glue, staples, and other preferences.

You have a lot of options for paintings that you can create with this type of canvas that is durable as well as mainly easy to spread your paint around on as you are holding and turning it, depending on the size of a canvas.

If you are working with an extra large canvas it may take more than one person to spread the paint around if you are doing it manually while you are holding it.

This type of canvas is harder to damage and does not bend at all, for it stays firm and level.

Some of the most beautiful paintings that have ever existed were painted on a stretched canvas that still looks amazingly beautiful and vibrant today the same as the day they were created.

As with any product, there are different levels of quality in a canvas depending on the brand of it however, there are still many options to choose from that do offer quality.

CANVAS ROLLS

A canvas roll is a canvas material that is rolled up into one big roll that has not yet been stretched around a frame to make a firm canvas.

You can paint on this canvas material without it being stretched first and then stretch it over a frame later if you have the stretching tools to do so.

If you sell your paintings, some people choose to buy the designs that have not yet been stretched and do it themselves later.

Canvas rolls are usually sold based on the length you need in yards for each project.

To store a rolled painting you can actually get a shipping tube to keep it in that which prevents any damage to it.

With this roll you can make a small canvas and large canvas from the same roll just cut the size you want for each canvas you will be painting.

When using a canvas roll that will be stretched later, you have to take into consideration there will be a slight difference in your design once the canvas is stretched, if it is not originally designed based on it being stretched.

WOOD CANVAS

A wood canvas is completely solid on the top and sides as well as it can be sanded and varnished wood, or it can be unfinished with a slight texture to it.

When using a wood canvas, it can be easy to warp if using a heavy amount of paint depending on the type of wood the canvas is made from.

Having a sealant applied and dried on the wood before applying paint will help to prevent paint from seeping down into the wood and warping it due to being wet.

Wood canvas can give a whole new beautiful look to any painting, and it can last a lifetime.

Wood is a great choice for a type of canvas to use as it is durable but yet mostly still considered light weight depending on the size you are using.

You also have the option to use a soldering iron to create all kind of designs rather than using paint on a wood canvas.

Resin is also a great option to cover your canvas in once you have already created your design on the canvas, this will truly bring life to the detail and colors in your design while also sealing it on the canvas in which helps to prevent fading or damage.

CANVAS BOARDS

Canvas boards are similar to panels however, they are slightly different that will depend on the type of board the canvas material is framed around.

The canvas boards usually are more durable and thicker than a regular panel depending on the quality of the board.

These types of canvas are also lightweight and easy to store or move to different locations.

Boards are another cost-effective product to use and practice on your painting skills as well as creating amazing portraits.

Once again this type of canvas does not require a lot of paint, and it does not require a lot of time to dry like other types of canvas.

You can also insert canvas boards inside a picture frame depending on the thickness of the board you are using.
